Vknanj is a term used in the fictional culture of the Lyran people in the imagined region of Norun to denote a ritual of binding memories through storytelling. The practice encompasses the ceremonial event, the act of narrative recital, and the creation of a physical memory artifact that is kept for future generations.

Etymology: The word is said to derive from Lyran roots vka- meaning “to bind” and nnaj meaning “story.” In the in-universe corpus, the earliest explicit reference appears in the Annals of Norun, dated to roughly the 14th century.

Practice: The vknanj ritual is usually held during the midwinter festival. Participants sit in a circle; each contributor offers a personal or communal memory, with emphasis on ancestors, moral lessons, and shared achievements. A designated scribe records the narratives and compiles them into a memory codex, which is then bound with cord and sealed with a knot. The codex is stored in the communal hall and read aloud at future gatherings.

Cultural role and variants: Vknanj reinforces social bonds, transmits intergenerational knowledge, and facilitates reconciliation after conflicts. Rural communities retain the most ceremonial form; urban centers and diaspora communities may condense the ritual or localize it, sometimes using modified terms such as “vknanj rite.”
