Viviparids

Viviparids are a group of mammals that give birth to live young, as opposed to laying eggs. This characteristic is known as viviparity and is a defining feature of the group. Viviparids are found in various habitats around the world, including forests, grasslands, and deserts. They exhibit a wide range of adaptations, from small, nocturnal creatures to large, herbivorous animals.

The term "viviparids" encompasses a diverse array of species, including marsupials, monotremes, and placental mammals. Placental mammals, which include humans, are the most diverse group of viviparids. They are further divided into two main subgroups: the Xenarthra and the Boreoeutheria. The Xenarthra includes species like armadillos, anteaters, and sloths, which are native to the Americas. The Boreoeutheria, on the other hand, is a diverse group that includes rodents, primates, and carnivores, among others.

Viviparids have evolved various reproductive strategies to ensure the survival of their offspring. Some species, like the platypus, lay eggs that are incubated in a nest, while others, like the kangaroo, give birth to relatively undeveloped young that continue to develop in a pouch. Placental mammals, including humans, give birth to fully developed young that are capable of surviving independently from birth.
