Virtaussäe, which translates to "flow verse" or "stream verse" in English, is a literary device characterized by a continuous, unbroken stream of thoughts, feelings, or perceptions presented in a narrative. It aims to mimic the natural, often associative, flow of consciousness experienced by a human mind. Unlike traditional prose that meticulously structures sentences and paragraphs, virtaussäe may feature run-on sentences, fragmented thoughts, and a lack of conventional punctuation or logical transitions. The emphasis is on capturing the immediate, often unfiltered, internal experience of a character.

This technique is closely associated with modernist literature, where authors sought new ways to represent psychological reality. James Joyce's Ulysses, particularly in Molly Bloom's soliloquy, is a prominent example of virtaussäe in practice. Virginia Woolf also employed elements of this style to delve into the inner lives of her characters. The effect of virtaussäe can be disorienting for the reader, requiring them to actively piece together meaning and follow the often meandering path of the narrator's mind. It can also create a sense of immediacy and intimacy, drawing the reader directly into the character's subjective world. The absence of strict grammatical rules allows for a more fluid and organic expression of thought.
