Virhelukemia

Virhelukemia, also known as viral leukemia, is a type of cancer that is caused by a virus. The term "virhelukemia" is derived from the words "virus" and "leukemia," with "helu" being a Finnish word for cancer. This type of leukemia is characterized by the presence of a viral infection that promotes the uncontrolled growth of blood cells, leading to the development of leukemia.

The most common viruses associated with virhelukemia are human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), which is also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). HTLV-1 is primarily responsible for adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), while HHV-8 is linked to primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) and multicentric Castleman's disease.

Virhelukemia is typically diagnosed through blood tests and imaging studies. Treatment options vary depending on the specific type of leukemia and the underlying virus. Antiviral medications, chemotherapy, and, in some cases, stem cell transplantation may be used to manage the condition.

Prevention of virhelukemia involves avoiding exposure to the viruses that cause it. For HTLV-1, this includes practicing safe sex and avoiding blood transfusions from infected donors. For HHV-8, there is no known prevention method, as it is not transmitted through blood transfusions or sexual contact. However, avoiding close contact with individuals who have Kaposi's sarcoma can help reduce the risk of transmission.
