Violationled

Violationled is a nonstandard, historically recorded form of the past tense and past participle of the verb violate. The standard forms are violated and violated. Violationled appears in a handful of 19th‑century texts and some contemporary informal writing, often as a result of over‑application of the past‑tense suffix ‑ed to a noun derivative, violation. Because of its rarity and nonconformity to conventional English morphology, major dictionaries such as the Oxford English Dictionary, Merriam‑Webster, and Collins do not list it. It is occasionally flagged as a typographical error in editorial contexts.

The construction can be analyzed morphologically as violation (noun) + ‑led, an unattested past‑tense affix. Usage examples include “The policy’s rules were violationled by the employee” (1884) and a 2021 online forum post where a user mistakenly wrote “She violationled the privacy agreement.” Linguists note that such forms are examples of over‑agglutination, a process where productive grammatical affixes are inappropriately applied to words not historically carrying them. This phenomenon is also seen in other nonstandard forms such as “bakeded” or “enjoyeded.”

Violationled is typically regarded as a mistake rather than a legitimate variant and is discouraged in formal writing. Nonetheless, it serves as an illustrative case of how English speakers can create new lexical items through hypothesized morphological rules.
