Vinkelrett

Vinkelrett is a Norwegian term that translates to “perpendicular” in English and is used primarily in geometry, engineering, and related technical fields to describe the relationship between two lines, planes, or surfaces that intersect at a right angle of 90 degrees. In Euclidean geometry, two lines are vinkelrett when the measure of the angle formed at their point of intersection equals a right angle, symbolically expressed as ∠(l₁,l₂)=90°. This property is fundamental for constructing orthogonal coordinate systems, such as Cartesian grids, where the x‑ and y‑axes are defined as mutually vinkelrett.

The concept extends to three‑dimensional space, where a line can be vinkelrett to a plane if it meets the plane at a right angle, and likewise two planes are vinkelrett when their normal vectors are parallel. In practical applications, establishing vinkelrett relationships is essential for building stable structures, aligning mechanical components, and designing electronic circuits where orthogonal layouts reduce interference.

Mathematically, vinkelrettness can be verified using vector dot products: two vectors a and b are vinkelrett if a·b = 0. In analytic geometry, the slope of one line is the negative reciprocal of the other’s slope, provided neither is vertical or horizontal.
