Vindtätt

Vindtätt is a Swedish term meaning wind-tight or windproof. It describes the property of a surface, material, or assembly that prevents wind from penetrating through to the interior. In practice, vindtätthet is used mainly in building and outdoor apparel, where controlling wind flow is important for comfort, energy efficiency, and protection from the cold.

In building technology, vindtätthet refers to the resistance of the building envelope to wind-driven air infiltration. A wind-tight exterior helps reduce heat loss and drafts, while still allowing moisture to diffuse outward through appropriate vapor-permeable layers. Achieving vindtätthet involves continuous air barriers, well-sealed joints, overlaps, and proper detailing at penetrations such as windows, doors, and vents. The wind-tightness of a construction is often evaluated through air leakage tests or standardized measurements that quantify how much air passes through the envelope under pressure differences.

In clothing and outdoor gear, vindtätt describes fabrics or membranes that block wind while providing some degree of breathability. Wind-safe garments aim to minimize convective cooling in exposed conditions, typically balancing wind resistance with moisture vapor transport to stay comfortable.

Relation to other concepts is common in Swedish construction literature. Vindtätthet is discussed alongside lufttäthet (airtightness) and vattentäthet (waterproofing), with attention to how wind-tight layers interact with ventilation, moisture management, and overall building performance.
