Viljapuudus refers to a deficiency in fruit production in fruit trees. This condition can manifest in several ways, including a lack of flowering, poor fruit set, or the development of small, underdeveloped fruits. Several factors can contribute to viljapuudus, encompassing both environmental and horticultural causes.

Environmental factors such as insufficient sunlight, inadequate or excessive water supply, and extreme temperatures can significantly impact a tree's ability to produce fruit. Nutrient deficiencies in the soil, particularly a lack of phosphorus or potassium, are also common culprits. Furthermore, certain soil conditions, like poor drainage or overly compacted soil, can hinder root health and nutrient uptake, indirectly affecting fruit yield.

Horticultural practices also play a crucial role. Improper pruning, such as removing too much fruiting wood or pruning at the wrong time of year, can reduce the number of flowering spurs. Pollination issues are another significant cause; many fruit trees require cross-pollination from a compatible variety, and a lack of suitable pollinators (bees or other insects) or incompatible varieties nearby can lead to poor fruit set. Pests and diseases can also weaken the tree, diverting its energy away from fruit production. Finally, old age or a tree's overall vigor can contribute to a decline in fruitfulness.
