Viivejärjestelmät, also known as delay systems, are a class of dynamic systems where the system's output at a given time depends not only on the current input but also on past inputs or states. This dependence on past values is introduced by a time delay, which can be a pure delay (an input at time t affects the output at time t+τ, where τ is the delay) or a distributed delay (the output depends on a weighted average of inputs over a time interval).

These systems are ubiquitous in nature and engineering. Examples include biological systems with inherent response times, chemical processes where reactions take time to propagate, control systems with communication lags, and even economic models that reflect market response times. The presence of delay can significantly alter the behavior of a system, often leading to oscillations, instability, or a slower response compared to a system without delay.

The analysis and control of viivejärjestelmät present unique challenges. Traditional control design methods may not be directly applicable due to the infinite-dimensional nature of these systems in the state space. Specialized techniques such as Smith predictors, model predictive control (MPC) adapted for delays, and various stability analysis methods like Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals are employed to address these challenges.
