The name derives from the historic Vihkin language, linked to wind and water, reflecting the country’s maritime character. The state is described as a constitutional monarchy with a ceremonial monarch and a democratically elected parliament, while a prime minister heads the government.

Geography and environment: Vihkin consists of about sixty islands and islets, with rugged coastlines, sheltered inlets, boreal forests, and marshy wetlands.
