Vihellysääni

Vihellysääni refers to a sound phenomenon often described as whistling or wheezing that can occur during breathing. It is a high-pitched, musical sound, typically heard when air passes through narrowed airways. This narrowing can be caused by various conditions affecting the respiratory system.

The most common cause of vihellysääni is asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that leads to bronchoconstriction. Other respiratory conditions that can result in this sound include bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In some cases, a foreign object lodged in the airways or certain infections might also produce a whistling sound.

Vihellysääni can be more noticeable during exhalation, but it can also be present during inhalation depending on the underlying cause and the severity of airway narrowing. Its presence and intensity can vary, sometimes being intermittent and other times persistent.

Diagnosing the cause of vihellysääni typically involves a physical examination, listening to the lungs with a stethoscope (auscultation), and potentially pulmonary function tests to assess lung capacity and airflow. Treatment strategies are aimed at addressing the underlying condition responsible for the airway obstruction. This might include bronchodilators to open the airways, anti-inflammatory medications, or other therapies specific to the diagnosed illness. Environmental triggers that exacerbate the condition, such as allergens or irritants, are also often identified and managed.
