This configuration involves four conductors that carry different electrical signals, enabling more complex control and functionality than simpler two-wire or three-wire systems.

In a typical HVAC context, a Vierleitungs system often includes two separate pairs of wires. One pair is dedicated to supplying power to the unit, often a live and a neutral connection.
