These credits are typically offered by financial institutions, such as banks, or by specialized export credit agencies (ECAs) that are often government-backed. The primary purpose of vientiluottoja is to mitigate the risks associated with exporting goods and services, thereby encouraging domestic businesses to engage in international markets.

There are several types of vientiluottoja. Short-term export credits are commonly used for financing the production and sale of goods that are expected to be paid for relatively quickly, often within 180 days. Medium and long-term export credits, on the other hand, are designed for larger capital goods and projects that have longer payment cycles, sometimes spanning several years. These longer-term credits are crucial for enabling the export of significant infrastructure projects, machinery, and equipment.

Vientiluottoja can take various forms, including direct loans to the exporter, guarantees that protect exporters or their banks against non-payment by foreign buyers, and insurance policies that cover political and commercial risks. For instance, an exporter might receive a loan to cover the costs of manufacturing goods for an overseas order, or their bank might be guaranteed against losses if the foreign buyer defaults. ECAs play a vital role in providing these facilities, particularly when commercial banks are hesitant due to the perceived risks in certain foreign markets.
