Viemärilaitoksia
Viemärilaitoksia, often translated as wastewater treatment plants or sewage works, are facilities responsible for collecting and treating wastewater from homes, industries, and other sources before it is discharged back into the environment. The primary goal is to remove pollutants and contaminants that could harm public health and aquatic ecosystems. This process typically involves several stages. Preliminary treatment removes large debris through screens and grit chambers. Primary treatment uses settling tanks to remove suspended solids. Secondary treatment employs biological processes, where microorganisms break down dissolved organic matter. Tertiary treatment, if implemented, further refines the water by removing nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, or specific chemical contaminants.
The collected wastewater travels through a network of underground pipes, known as sewers, to reach the treatment
