Vestibulaarinen

Vestibulaarinen refers to the vestibular system, a sensory system in the inner ear that provides the brain with information about spatial orientation, balance, and movement. It is crucial for maintaining posture, coordinating eye movements with head movements, and enabling us to navigate our environment. The vestibular system is composed of two main parts: the semicircular canals and the otolith organs.

The three semicircular canals are oriented at right angles to each other, allowing them to detect rotational movements of the head in all three planes: nodding, shaking, and tilting. Each canal contains fluid and hair cells that bend in response to the fluid's movement, sending signals to the brain.

The otolith organs, the utricle and the saccule, detect linear acceleration and the position of the head relative to gravity. They contain small calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia) that shift with changes in position, stimulating hair cells and relaying this information to the brain.

Disruptions to the vestibular system can lead to various symptoms, including vertigo (a sensation of spinning), dizziness, imbalance, nausea, and visual disturbances. These issues can arise from conditions affecting the inner ear, such as Meniere's disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), or vestibular neuritis, as well as from neurological disorders or head injuries. Assessment of the vestibular system often involves specialized tests to evaluate balance, eye movements, and the function of the inner ear structures.
