Vestibulären

Vestibulären refers to anything related to the vestibular system, which is a sensory system in the inner ear responsible for providing the brain with information about motion, head position, and spatial orientation. This system plays a crucial role in balance, posture, and the coordination of eye movements.

The vestibular system is composed of two main parts: the semicircular canals and the otolith organs. The three semicircular canals are oriented at right angles to each other and detect rotational movements of the head, such as turning or nodding. The otolith organs, specifically the utricle and saccule, detect linear acceleration (movement in a straight line) and the pull of gravity, informing us about head tilt.

When the head moves, fluid within these structures shifts, stimulating sensory hair cells. These cells then send signals to the brain via the vestibular nerve. The brain integrates this information with input from other senses, such as vision and proprioception (the sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body), to maintain balance and stability.

Disruptions to the vestibular system can lead to a variety of symptoms, including dizziness, vertigo (a sensation of spinning), nausea, and problems with balance and coordination. These issues can arise from various causes, including infections, head injuries, aging, or certain medical conditions. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is a common treatment approach for many of these conditions.
