Vesiympäristöt
Vesiympäristöt are habitats in which aquatic organisms live and interact within bodies of water. The term encompasses all types of water habitats, from the smallest streams to the deepest ocean trenches, and includes freshwater, brackish, and marine environments. Freshwater environments—such as rivers, lakes, ponds and wetlands—characteristically have low salinity and provide habitats for species adapted to variable flow regimes and water chemistry. Brackish waters, found in estuaries where fresh and saltwater mix, support organisms that tolerate fluctuating salinity and temperature conditions. Marine environments cover the full range of saltwater habitats, from shallow coastal zones to the abyssal plains of the oceans, and harbour a vast diversity of marine flora and fauna.
Physical factors structuring vesiympäristöt include water depth, temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, flow velocity and substrate type.
Research on vesiympäristöt is essential for understanding ecological processes such as nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration and
