Vesiväripaperi, also known as watercolor paper, is a specialized type of paper designed to withstand the application of water and pigments. Its unique properties make it ideal for watercolor painting, as it absorbs water without buckling or disintegrating. The absorbency of watercolor paper is a key factor in how colors blend and spread on the surface.

There are several types of watercolor paper, categorized primarily by their texture or "tooth." Hot-pressed paper is smooth, with minimal texture, and is often preferred for detailed work or for achieving a very flat wash. Cold-pressed paper has a medium texture, offering a balance between detail and absorbent qualities, making it a versatile choice for many artists. Rough paper, with its pronounced texture, allows for more visible brushstrokes and can create interesting effects with washes, though it is less suited for fine detail.

The weight of watercolor paper, measured in grams per square meter (gsm) or pounds per ream, also plays a role. Heavier papers are more durable and less likely to warp when wet, while lighter papers may require stretching or mounting to prevent buckling. Watercolor paper is typically made from cotton pulp, which provides strength and absorbency, or from wood pulp, which is more economical but less durable. The sizing of the paper, a substance added during manufacturing, controls the rate at which water is absorbed, influencing how colors behave on the surface.
