Vesinikbromiid

Vesinikbromiid, also known by its chemical formula HBr, is a diatomic molecule consisting of a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to a bromine atom. It is a colorless gas at standard temperature and pressure, possessing a pungent odor. When HBr dissolves in water, it forms hydrobromic acid, a strong acid that is highly corrosive.

HBr can be produced through various methods. Industrially, it is often synthesized by reacting hydrogen gas with bromine vapor at elevated temperatures. Another common method involves the reaction of phosphorus tribromide with water. In laboratory settings, it can be generated by the reaction of sodium bromide or potassium bromide with a strong non-oxidizing acid like phosphoric acid.

Hydrobromic acid, the aqueous solution of HBr, is a versatile reagent used in organic synthesis. It is employed in the preparation of alkyl bromides from alcohols and in the hydrobromination of alkenes and alkynes. It also finds application in the production of inorganic bromides and as a reducing agent. Due to its corrosive nature, HBr and its solutions must be handled with extreme caution, using appropriate personal protective equipment and working in well-ventilated areas. Exposure to HBr gas can cause severe irritation to the respiratory tract, eyes, and skin.
