Vesimolekyylissä

Vesimolekyylissä is the Finnish term for a water molecule. A water molecule has the chemical formula H2O, meaning it is composed of two hydrogen atoms covalently bonded to one oxygen atom. The oxygen atom is more electronegative than the hydrogen atoms, causing the electrons in the covalent bonds to be pulled closer to the oxygen. This results in a polar molecule, where the oxygen end carries a partial negative charge and the hydrogen ends carry partial positive charges.

This polarity is fundamental to many of water's unique properties. It allows water molecules to form hydrogen bonds with each other. In a hydrogen bond, the partially positive hydrogen atom of one water molecule is attracted to the partially negative oxygen atom of another water molecule. These intermolecular forces are responsible for water's relatively high boiling point, surface tension, and its ability to act as a universal solvent for many polar and ionic substances.

The bent shape of the water molecule, with an approximate bond angle of 104.5 degrees between the hydrogen atoms, also contributes to its polarity. The two hydrogen atoms are positioned on one side of the oxygen atom, creating a dipole moment. This molecular structure and its resulting polarity are crucial for life on Earth, influencing everything from biological processes to climate.
