Vesilahustes

Vesilahustes, also known as water horehound or water marigold, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the family Lamiaceae (formerly Verbenaceae). It is native to regions of Europe, particularly in wetlands, marshes, and moist meadows, but has also been introduced to other temperate areas.

The plant typically reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters and is characterized by its square-shaped stems, opposite leaves, and small, tubular, bilabiate flowers. The leaves are green and ovate, often with fine hairs on the surface. Its flowers are usually pale purple or bluish, occurring in dense spikes or whorls at the top of the stems during the summer months.

Vesilahustes has been traditionally used in folk medicine for its supposed digestive and respiratory benefits. It has also been employed as an ornamental plant due to its attractive flowers and foliage.

The plant prefers moist, well-drained soils and thrives in full sun to partial shade environments. Propagation is commonly achieved through seed sowing or division of established plants during spring.

While generally not considered invasive, vesilahustes can spread rapidly in suitable habitats and may compete with native vegetation. It is important to manage its growth appropriately to preserve ecological balance.

Although not widely cultivated commercially, vesilahustes is sometimes grown in herb gardens or naturalistic plantings for its aesthetic appeal and historical medicinal associations. Its role in local ecosystems includes providing nectar for pollinators like bees and butterflies.
