Vesijäähdytys, or water cooling, is a method of thermal management that uses a liquid coolant, typically water or a mixture of water and additives, to transfer heat away from a component or system. This method is widely employed in various applications where efficient heat dissipation is crucial, such as in internal combustion engines, computer systems, and industrial machinery.

The fundamental principle behind water cooling involves circulating a coolant through a loop. The coolant absorbs heat from the component it is in contact with, often through a heat sink or water block. This heated coolant then travels through tubes to a radiator or heat exchanger. In the radiator, the coolant releases its heat to the surrounding environment, often aided by fans that increase airflow. Once cooled, the liquid is pumped back to the component to repeat the cycle.

In computer systems, water cooling is often chosen for its superior cooling performance compared to air cooling, allowing for higher overclocking potential and quieter operation due to fewer or slower-moving fans. The components typically involved are a water block, pump, radiator, reservoir, and tubing. In automotive engines, water cooling is standard, utilizing a radiator, water pump, thermostat, and coolant passages within the engine block and cylinder head to maintain optimal operating temperatures. Industrial applications leverage water cooling for large-scale heat-generating processes, ensuring equipment longevity and operational efficiency.
