Verðbréttum
Verðbréttum is the Icelandic term for securities. This broad category encompasses various financial instruments that represent a monetary value and can be traded. Common examples of verðbréttum include stocks, bonds, and derivatives. Stocks, also known as equities, represent ownership in a company, granting shareholders a claim on the company's assets and earnings. Bonds, on the other hand, are debt instruments where an issuer borrows money from investors and promises to repay the principal amount with interest over a specified period. Derivatives are contracts whose value is derived from an underlying asset, such as stocks, bonds, commodities, or currencies.
The primary function of verðbréttum is to facilitate capital raising for businesses and governments, while offering
