Vertsimmunforsvaret, often translated as the innate immune system, represents the first line of defense in an organism's immune response. It is a rapid and non-specific system that acts immediately or within hours of pathogen detection. This system does not rely on prior exposure to a specific pathogen, meaning it recognizes general patterns associated with microbes, rather than unique antigens.

Key components of vertsimmunforsvaret include physical and chemical barriers such as skin, mucous membranes, and stomach acid, which prevent pathogens from entering the body. If these barriers are breached, cellular components like phagocytes (macrophages and neutrophils) engulf and destroy invaders.
