Verteporfiini

Verteporfiini is a drug used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) primarily for the treatment of certain eye conditions, most notably age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It belongs to a class of drugs known as photosensitizers. When administered intravenously, verteporfin selectively accumulates in abnormal new blood vessels that can grow in the eye, such as those found in wet AMD.

The treatment involves administering verteporfiini over a period of 10 minutes. Following the infusion, a non-thermal laser light is applied to the affected area of the eye. This light activates the verteporfin. The activated verteporfin then produces reactive oxygen species, which are highly reactive molecules. These reactive oxygen species damage and destroy the abnormal blood vessels, thereby reducing leakage and preventing further vision loss.

In addition to wet AMD, verteporfin is also used to treat other conditions involving choroidal neovascularization, such as pathological myopia and ocular histoplasmosis. Common side effects can include temporary visual disturbances like blurred vision or spots, and skin photosensitivity, meaning increased sensitivity to light after treatment. Patients undergoing verteporfin PDT are advised to avoid direct sunlight and bright indoor lights for several days following the procedure.
