Vertailuryhmänä is a Finnish term that translates to "control group" or "comparison group" in English. In research, particularly in scientific and statistical contexts, a control group serves as a baseline against which the effects of an intervention or treatment are measured. The participants in a control group do not receive the experimental treatment or intervention, or they may receive a placebo or standard care.

The primary purpose of a control group is to help researchers isolate the effect of the independent variable. By comparing the outcomes of the group that received the intervention (the experimental group) with the outcomes of the control group, researchers can determine whether the observed changes are actually due to the intervention itself, rather than other factors such as natural variation, the passage of time, or the placebo effect.

Establishing a well-defined and appropriate control group is crucial for the validity and reliability of research findings. The control group should ideally be as similar as possible to the experimental group in all relevant aspects, except for the intervention being studied. Random assignment of participants to either the experimental or control group is a common method used to ensure this similarity and minimize bias. Without a control group, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to confidently conclude that an observed effect is a result of the treatment.
