Verslehre is the study of verse and its formal properties within literature. It focuses on how poems are constructed through meter, rhythm, rhyme, and the organization of lines into stanzas and forms. Central concerns include the metrical pattern of lines (feet such as iambs, trochees, dactyls, and spondees), line length, caesura, and enjambment, as well as rhyme schemes and the arrangement of stanzas.

Historically, Verslehre traces its roots to ancient Greek and Latin prosody and extended through medieval and vernacular traditions. In German-speaking scholarship the field has been closely linked with Metrik (metrics) and Reimkunde (rhyme study), while gradually incorporating insights from modern phonology and cognitive rhythm. Traditional analyses often distinguish meter types by syllabic, accentual-syllabic, or quantitative systems, and scholars may treat scansion, rhyme, and form as interconnected aspects of a poem’s architecture.

In practice, Verslehre serves both analytical and educational purposes. It provides tools to describe how a poem achieves its musical effects, to compare different poetic traditions, and to teach students how to recognize patterns, compose verse, or translate poetic rhythm into another language. Beyond fixed forms, the field also considers performance, pronunciation, and variation in living languages, acknowledging that rhythm and meter are influenced by speech and practice as well as written conventions.
