Versionhallintajärjestelmään, often referred to as VHJ or VCS (Version Control System), is a software system that helps manage changes to a file or set of files over time. This allows users to recall specific versions later, revert files to a previous state, compare changes, and track who made which modifications and when. Version control systems are crucial for software development projects, enabling teams to collaborate effectively by managing concurrent work and resolving conflicts.

The core concept of a version control system is the repository, which stores the history of all changes. When a developer works on a project, they check out a copy of the files, make modifications, and then commit these changes back to the repository. This commit operation creates a new version, often accompanied by a descriptive message explaining the changes. Common operations include committing, updating, branching, and merging. Branching allows developers to work on new features or fixes in isolation from the main codebase, and merging integrates these changes back into the main line of development.

There are two primary types of version control systems: centralized and distributed. Centralized systems, like Subversion (SVN), have a single central repository, and developers check out files from and commit them to this central server. Distributed systems, such as Git and Mercurial, give each developer a full copy of the repository, including its entire history. This distributed nature offers greater flexibility, fault tolerance, and performance. Git has become the de facto standard for distributed version control in modern software development.
