Versieering

Versieering is a term occasionally used to describe the set of practices and processes for creating, maintaining, and referencing sequential iterations of a digital artifact. The concept covers software programs, documents, datasets, APIs, and other artifacts that evolve over time. The word combines versie (version) with the agentive suffix -ering, and is more common in informal Dutch discourse or in discussions about Dutch terminology for software development, rather than in formal dictionaries. In mainstream Dutch, the related concept is typically referred to as versiebeheer or version control.

In practice, versieering involves assigning identifiers to distinct iterations, preserving a complete history, and enabling reconstruction or rollback to prior states. Common mechanisms include tagging releases, maintaining an immutable history in a version control system, and publishing changelogs that describe the changes between versions. Semantic versioning, which uses a three-part numeric scheme (major.minor.patch) to convey compatibility and changes, is a widely adopted approach within versieering in software projects. Other approaches include calendar-based versioning (CalVer) or custom schemes tailored to a project’s release cycle.
