Verrechnungs

Verrechnungs, in the sense of Verrechnung, is the process of settling debts and credits by balancing outstanding amounts between parties, thereby reducing the number and value of separate payments. In accounting, Verrechnung enables netting of intercompany or interparty claims and obligations using designated accounts or clearing arrangements. It is commonly used in business-to-business transactions, banking, and financial markets.

Applications include internal Verrechnung via Verrechnungskonten within an organization, cross-border clearing and payment netting through clearing houses, and settling accounts between customers and suppliers. Netting can lower liquidity needs and settlement risk and is often mandated or facilitated by industry standards and contracts. In banking, Verrechnungsstellen or clearing systems coordinate the exchange of payment messages and the final settlement of net positions.

Legal and tax contexts shape forms of Verrechnung. For example, in Switzerland the Verrechnungssteuer is a withholding tax on certain investment income, collected at source and reclaimable under conditions. In other jurisdictions, similar credit or offset mechanisms appear under transfer pricing discussions or service charge settlements (Verrechnungspreise).
