It refers to the legal responsibility of an individual or entity to cover debts or damages with their own assets. This concept is fundamental in civil law and is closely related to the principle of a person's general liability for their obligations.

In essence, Vermögensnhaftung means that if a person or company incurs a debt or causes damage, their entire net worth – encompassing all their possessions and financial resources – can be legally pursued to satisfy that claim. This contrasts with specific forms of liability that might be limited to a particular asset or a predetermined amount, such as the liability of a limited partner in a company.
