Verkþættir

Verkþættir is a term in Icelandic literary studies that denotes shorter narrative pieces that belong to a larger work or form a cycle of linked pieces. The compound word comes from verk (work) and þættir (episodes or snippets), with the plural indicating multiple installments.

In medieval Icelandic manuscripts, þættir were short narratives embedded within longer sagas or chronicles, often serving as digressions or illustrative episodes. In contemporary usage, verkþættir can describe either a sequence of connected short stories (a short-story cycle) or a collection of shorter pieces published together; the central idea is that the pieces are shorter than a novel yet share thematic or fictional continuity.
