Verkkosolujen are individual functional units that form part of a larger network system. The term, derived from the Finnish language, literally translates to “network cells”. In biological contexts, a verkkosolu refers to a cell involved in immune or nervous network structures, such as microglial cells in the brain that help maintain homeostatic communication across neural pathways. In technological contexts, the word is used to describe small, localized communication units within larger networks, such as the cells in a cellular radio system that provide coverage to specific geographic areas. Each cell operates with a base station that communicates with mobile devices; the collection of cells constitutes an overall network that enables continuous connectivity.

Key functions include facilitating signal transmission, managing data traffic, providing redundancy, and allowing scalable expansion of coverage. Verkkosolujen are critical for load balancing because traffic can be dynamically shifted between adjacent cells to maintain service quality.
