Venturia

Venturia is a genus of fungi in the family Venturiaceae, within the order Pleosporales. Members of Venturia are primarily plant pathogens, known for causing scab diseases on leaves and fruits of various host plants. The genus is most notable for its impact on apple production, but species in the group can affect other Rosaceae and related hosts.

The best known species is Venturia inaequalis, the causal agent of apple scab. Apple scab is a widespread disease that creates olive-brown to black velvety lesions on leaves and fruit, leading to cosmetic damage and, in severe cases, reduced yield and fruit quality. The fungus overwinters in fallen leaves as pseudothecia, producing ascospores in spring when conditions are moist and cool. These primary infections are followed by secondary infection cycles during wet periods, enabling rapid disease spread through a growing season.

Disease management relies on an integrated approach. Sanitation—removing and destroying infected leaf litter—reduces inoculum. Cultivar resistance is sought where possible, and fungicide programs are employed with timing coordinated to the life cycle of the pathogen and prevailing weather conditions. Good orchard hygiene, appropriate spacing for air circulation, and monitoring for symptom development also contribute to control efforts.

Beyond Venturia inaequalis, other Venturia species have been described on different plant hosts, though V. inaequalis remains the most extensively studied and agriculturally significant. The genus is discussed primarily in the context of mycology, plant pathology, and agricultural management, with a distribution that correlates with regions where susceptible hosts are cultivated.
