Vejtyperne

Vejtyperne is a classification system used in Denmark to describe standard types of roads for planning, design, and management. The concept organizes roads by their function, expected traffic, and design requirements, providing a common framework for engineers, planners, and authorities.

In practice, vejtyperne distinguish among different levels of road capacity and access. Motorvej, or motorways, are fully access-controlled with high speeds and grade-separated interchanges. Hovedveje (main roads) carry substantial through traffic and connect major destinations, often with higher design speeds than smaller roads but not to the extent of motorways. Landeveje or regionalveje cover rural and regional connections, typically with two or more lanes and at-grade intersections. Lokalveje describe streets with local access, residential roads, and smaller urban connections, usually with lower speeds and tighter geometry.

The vejtyperne influence several design parameters, including speed limits, number of lanes, intersection types, and land use planning. They also guide public investments, maintenance planning, and environmental considerations by aligning road projects with their intended function and traffic roles. Municipalities and the national road authority (such as Vejdirektoratet) use the classification in planning documents, GIS mappings, and transportation policies to ensure consistent standards across regions.
