Veejnost

Veřejnost (often written without diacritics as veejnost) is a Czech and Slovak term meaning the public—the general population or the audience for information and communication.

In sociology and political science, veřejnost designates the public sphere, the space where citizens discuss matters of common interest, form attitudes, and hold authorities to account. Public opinion (veřejné mínění) is a key concept in this sense and is shaped by media, discourse, and events.

In journalism and media studies, veřejnost refers to the audience reached by media and to the expectations of transparency and accountability by public institutions toward citizens. Media, education, and communication aim to inform the veřejnost and to enable participation in public life.

Usage varies with context; the term appears in phrases such as veřejný (public), veřejnoprávní (public service or public-law), and related concepts about the public sector. In Czech and Slovak discourse, veřejnost remains central to discussions about democracy, civil society, and the relationship between citizens and government.
