Vedenimeytymistä, also known as water intoxication or hyponatremia, is a potentially dangerous condition that occurs when an individual consumes an excessive amount of water in a short period. This leads to a dilution of sodium levels in the blood. Sodium is a critical electrolyte that helps maintain fluid balance inside and outside of cells. When blood sodium levels drop too low, water moves into cells, causing them to swell.

The symptoms of vedenimeytymistä can vary depending on the severity and the speed at which it develops. Mild cases may present with nausea, vomiting, headache, and confusion. As the condition progresses, more serious symptoms can arise, including muscle weakness, cramps, seizures, coma, and in extreme circumstances, death. This swelling of brain cells is particularly concerning due to the limited space within the skull.

Vedenimeytymistä is relatively uncommon in healthy individuals with normal kidney function, as the kidneys are typically able to excrete excess water. However, certain situations can increase the risk. These include endurance athletes who drink large amounts of water without adequately replacing electrolytes, individuals with certain medical conditions affecting kidney function or hormone regulation, and in rare cases, as a consequence of psychiatric conditions leading to compulsive water drinking. Treatment involves restricting fluid intake and, in severe cases, administering intravenous saline solutions to raise sodium levels.
