Vaul is a fictional coastal city-state in the western archipelago of Eldoria. It serves as a maritime trading hub and cultural crossroads in many fantasy settings.

The name Vaul is linked to the Vaulan language, commonly interpreted as harbor or gate, though meanings differ among sources.

Vaul sits at the head of a sheltered bay with a natural harbor and limestone cliffs. The old town forms a compact fortress core, while a newer harbor district stretches along the quays.

Its history begins with seafaring clans in the early medieval period. Vaul grew into an autonomous city-state with a merchant class and renowned shipyards. It faced pirate raiders and political rivals, shaping a legal tradition favorable to trade and navigation.

Governance is described as a constitutional maritime republic. An eleven-member Council, elected by guilds and property holders, appoints a Mayor who leads the executive.

Population is around 40,000, and the city is multilingual. Vaulan is the official language, with Eldoran and local dialects common in markets and ports.
