Vastavirtalämmönvaihdin is a Finnish term referring to a countercurrent heat exchanger. This type of heat exchanger is a device that transfers heat between two fluids flowing in opposite directions. The principle behind a countercurrent heat exchanger is that it maximizes the efficiency of heat transfer by maintaining a more consistent temperature difference across the entire length of the exchanger. This is in contrast to co-current heat exchangers, where the fluids flow in the same direction, and the temperature difference diminishes along the exchanger.

In a vastavirtalämmönvaihdin, one fluid enters at one end and flows towards the other, while the second fluid enters at the opposite end and flows back.
