Varshavyanka

Varshavyanka is the common name for the Polish revolutionary song "Warszawianka 1905 roku" (Warsawianka of 1905). The music was composed by Józef Pławiński and the lyrics were written by Wacław Święcicki in 1879. The song became widely popular among Polish workers and socialists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The original lyrics were written by Święcicki while imprisoned in the Warsaw Citadel by the Russian authorities. The song's theme is one of struggle, sacrifice, and hope for a better future, often associated with revolutionary movements. It gained particular prominence during the 1905 Russian Revolution.

"Warszawianka 1905 roku" is distinct from an earlier song also called "Warszawianka," which dates back to the November Uprising of 1830. The 1905 version, however, is the one most commonly referred to by the name Varshavyanka, especially in international contexts, due to its widespread adoption by various socialist and labor movements across Europe. It has been translated into numerous languages and remains a symbol of resistance and solidarity for many.
