Varoite
Varoite is a rare mineral belonging to the garnet group, with the chemical formula Ca3(Fe2+,Fe3+,Al)2(SiO4)3. It was first discovered in 1962 in the Vara mine in Norway, from which it derives its name. Varoite is typically found in metamorphic rocks, particularly in contact metamorphic zones around granitic intrusions. It is characterized by its deep red to brownish-red color, which is due to the presence of ferric iron in its structure. The mineral has a hardness of approximately 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale and a specific gravity ranging from 3.6 to 3.7. Varoite is often found in small, anhedral crystals or as granular masses. It is not commonly used in jewelry due to its rarity and the fact that it is often found in small, imperfect crystals. However, it is of interest to mineral collectors and researchers due to its unique chemical composition and the geological conditions under which it forms.
