Varjevant

Varjevant is a fictional country created for world-building and educational exercises in encyclopedic writing. It is described as a parliamentary republic located in the Varjev Archipelago, a temperate coastal region with rolling hills, forests, and several offshore isles. The official language is Varjevanti, with English widely used in government and commerce. The capital is Lyran and the largest city is Kestrel.

It has about 1.2 million residents and covers roughly 12,000 square kilometers. Varjevant practices a multi-party system with a largely ceremonial president and a prime minister who leads the cabinet. The unicameral parliament has 72 seats elected by proportional representation for four-year terms.

Historically, Varjevant was settled in the early medieval period and achieved de facto autonomy in the 17th century, attaining full sovereignty in 1873. The country developed a diversified economy, with services, tourism, light manufacturing, and information technology as major sectors. The currency is the vanth, and the central bank governs monetary policy.

Key infrastructure includes the port of Harborview, two international airports, and a continental rail network that connects major towns. The economy emphasizes renewable energy, notably wind and hydro power.

Varjevant’s culture emphasizes regional traditions, bilingual media, and a public education system that ranks highly in literacy and STEM outcomes. Notable features include Varjevant National Park and the University of Varjevant.
