Valuuttavaikutukset, also known as currency effects or foreign exchange effects, refer to the impact that fluctuations in exchange rates have on the financial performance of companies and the value of investments. When a company operates internationally or holds assets denominated in foreign currencies, changes in the exchange rates between its home currency and foreign currencies can lead to gains or losses.

These effects can manifest in several ways. Transaction exposure arises from the normal course of business, such as buying or selling goods and services in foreign currencies. For example, if a company based in Finland sells products to the United States and is paid in US dollars, a depreciation of the dollar against the euro would result in fewer euros received, negatively impacting revenue. Conversely, an appreciation of the dollar would be beneficial.

Translation exposure, also known as accounting exposure, relates to the process of converting the financial statements of foreign subsidiaries into the parent company's reporting currency. Exchange rate changes can alter the reported value of assets, liabilities, and equity, affecting the consolidated financial statements.

Economic exposure, or operating exposure, is a longer-term effect that considers how exchange rate fluctuations might impact a company's future competitiveness and market position. This can influence pricing strategies, production locations, and overall demand for its products or services. Companies often employ hedging strategies, such as using forward contracts or options, to mitigate the risks associated with these currency movements.
