Valurnas

Valurnas is a coastal city-state on the western edge of the continent of Eldoria. Built around a natural harbor, it serves as a major trading hub and cultural crossroads for merchants, sailors, and artisans.

Founded in the early medieval period by seafaring clans, Valurnas gained independence after the Great Siege and developed as a mercantile power. Its Golden Age involved extensive canal networks and artisanal guilds, and it weathered dynastic conflicts through diplomacy.

Valurnas is governed by the Council of Quarters, a five-ward assembly elected by guild members and resident freemen. The High Warden, elected for a five-year term, serves as head of government and commander of the city guard, while the Syndic Council manages trade policy.

The economy centers on port trade, shipbuilding, textiles, glassmaking, and salted goods. It maintains free-trade charters with neighboring states, while a robust artisan quarter exports crafted wares under strict quality standards.

As of the latest census, Valurnas is home to around 60,000 residents speaking Eldoric as the common tongue, with communities of artisans and sailors. Religions are diverse, with temples and sanctuaries for multiple faiths; the Midwinter Tide festival marks the year’s shortest day.

Key landmarks include the Sapphire Gate, the Moonspire observatory, and the Coral Market. A network of canals and a tide-controlled harbor facilitate navigation, while the Valurnan Athenaeum preserves maritime charts, botanical collections, and trade law manuscripts.
