Valoärsytyksestä, known in English as photophobia or light sensitivity, is a medical symptom characterized by an abnormal intolerance to light. This means that ordinary levels of light can cause discomfort or pain in the eyes. It is not a disease in itself, but rather an indicator of an underlying condition.

The sensation can range from mild annoyance to severe pain, often accompanied by a desire to close the eyes or seek darkness. People experiencing photophobia may also report headaches, tearing, redness of the eyes, and blurred vision. The intensity of the discomfort can vary depending on the brightness of the light source and the duration of exposure.

Numerous conditions can cause photophobia. Eye-related issues are common culprits, including infections like conjunctivitis or keratitis, inflammation such as uveitis or iritis, and dry eye syndrome. Migraine headaches are also frequently associated with severe light sensitivity. Other neurological conditions, certain medications, and even trauma to the eye can trigger this symptom.

Diagnosis of the cause of photophobia typically involves a thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying condition responsible for the light sensitivity. This might involve medications to treat infections or inflammation, artificial tears for dry eyes, or managing migraines. In the interim, wearing sunglasses, hats, and avoiding bright lights can help alleviate symptoms.
