Valoärsykkeen, meaning light stimulus in Finnish, refers to the activation of sensory receptors by light. This process is fundamental to vision, allowing organisms to perceive their environment. In humans, light enters the eye through the cornea and pupil, focusing on the retina. The retina contains specialized photoreceptor cells, rods and cones, which convert light energy into electrical signals. Rods are highly sensitive to low light levels and are responsible for black and white vision and peripheral vision, while cones function in brighter light and are responsible for color vision and detailed central vision.

These electrical signals are then processed by other neurons in the retina before being transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. The brain, specifically the visual cortex, interprets these signals, enabling us to recognize shapes, colors, movement, and depth. The sensitivity and range of light stimuli that can be perceived vary greatly among species, influencing their behavior, survival strategies, and ecological niches.
