Valokatot

Valokatot is a Finnish term that translates to "sky lights" or "daylight roofs." It refers to a specific type of architectural feature, commonly found in older Finnish buildings, particularly in rural areas. These were typically small, often glass-paned openings incorporated into the highest part of a roof structure, usually just below the ridge.

The primary purpose of valokatot was to allow natural light to penetrate into attic spaces or upper rooms. Before the widespread availability of electricity, natural light was essential for any usable space, and attics were often used for storage or as workshops. The placement of these openings allowed for diffused daylight to enter, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day.

Valokatot also served a secondary function related to ventilation. The openings could be a means for warm, stale air to escape from the upper parts of the building, contributing to a more comfortable interior climate and helping to prevent moisture buildup. The design varied, but they were generally simple constructions, often featuring a small glazed section within the roof slope or at the gable end. While less common in modern construction due to advancements in insulation and lighting technology, valokatot remain a distinctive element of traditional Finnish vernacular architecture, reflecting a pragmatic approach to harnessing natural resources for illumination and ventilation.
