Valmera

Valmera is a fictional city-state and regional capital in the western maritime region of Eldara, in the fantasy world of Avaloria. It functions as a major port and commercial hub, linking sea routes with inland markets and serving as a center of craft and scholarship.

Located on a natural harbor along the Valmere Gulf, Valmera sits between chalk cliffs and open sea, with a temperate, breezy climate and a navigation-friendly coastline. The Old Quarter sits on higher ground overlooking the harbor, while newer districts spread along the river.

Valmera was founded by trader guilds in the 12th century and achieved de facto independence in the 14th. In the modern era it operates as a constitutional oligarchy, with the Council of Merchants and a Chief Prefect serving as executive. A municipal court handles local justice.

The economy centers on port commerce, shipbuilding, textiles, and glassware. Fish and citrus are important, and duty-free exchanges attract merchants from neighboring regions. The population is diverse, with Valmeran, Avalorian, and immigrant communities totaling roughly half a million residents.

Valmera hosts Market Days, maritime festivals, and a venerable university focused on navigation, marine biology, and law. Notable landmarks include the Grand Docks, the Lighthouse of Lysara, and the Market of Mirrors. Transportation relies on ferries, rail links, and road networks.
