Vallarpadam

Vallarpadam is an island situated off the coast of Kochi in Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. The island lies within the Kochi Port complex and is connected to the mainland by road, placing it in the vicinity of Kochi’s urban and industrial areas. The island is best known for housing the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam, a major port facility developed to serve as a transshipment hub for containerized cargo. The terminal began operations in 2011 and is operated by DP World Kochi, a subsidiary of DP World, under the oversight of the Cochin Port Trust. The ICTT represents a key element of India’s port modernization efforts and is integrated with the wider Kochi Port ecosystem.

The ICTT aims to improve India’s global shipping connectivity by offering direct access for transshipment cargo and reducing dependence on other regional hubs. Since opening, volumes and ongoing expansions have characterized the terminal, with investment and policy debates reflecting broader challenges and opportunities in port development in India.
