Valguslaineid

Valguslaineid, commonly referred to as light waves, are a fundamental aspect of the electromagnetic spectrum. They are disturbances in the electromagnetic field that propagate through space at the speed of light. This propagation occurs as oscillating electric and magnetic fields, perpendicular to each other and to the direction of travel. Visible light, the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that human eyes can perceive, comprises wavelengths roughly between 380 and 750 nanometers. Different wavelengths within this range are perceived by our brains as different colors, with shorter wavelengths appearing as violet and blue, and longer wavelengths as orange and red.

The behavior of light waves is governed by principles of wave mechanics. They exhibit phenomena such as reflection, where light bounces off a surface; refraction, where light bends as it passes from one medium to another; diffraction, where light spreads out as it passes through an opening or around an obstacle; and interference, where two or more light waves combine to produce a new wave pattern. These properties are essential for understanding a wide range of optical phenomena and technologies, from how we see the world to the design of lenses, lasers, and fiber optics. Light waves carry energy and momentum, and their interaction with matter forms the basis of many physical and chemical processes.
